What were they thinking?

Associated Press recently ran a story which was a good reminder of some of the craziest and dumb stories over the last decade…

Looking back over the last decade these are some of the most memorable moments in the foul-ups category…

1. This incident gave a whole new meaning to the term “boob tube.” The infamous Wardrobe Malfunction in front of millions of live viewers changed the way we watch live TV today. It’s still close to live, now we just need a few seconds of tape added to ensure nothing goes terribly unexpected in front of the world :)

2. Bernie Madoff and his Ponzi Scheme extraordinaire. It’s obviously a shame that the SEC didn’t listen to the tipsters that came forward early telling them that there was an issue. Instead, the SEC found him to be a “captivating speaker” so they didn’t move forward with an in-depth probe. Too bad for his investors.

3. It probably seemed like a good Public Relations move at the time, but looking back, Bush’s dramatic landing and speech on the carrier deck in front of the “Mission Accomplished” banner seems very ill-conceived. However, as they say, “everything is clearer in hindsight.”

4. Orange must not be bright enough. When then Vice President Dick Cheney shot one of his hunting buddies back in 2006, it provided plenty of fodder for late-night television hosts. Even Bush joked about his veep’s middle initial: “B. stands for Bull’s Eye.”

Not wanting to just pick on Republicans, the Democrats have had their own blunders as well…

5. Speaking of PR gone awry, how about the shot of Air Force One taken with lower Manhattan as a backdrop setting? Not only did the misguided photo-op cost $328,835, it also through New York residents into a pure panic. Even the Mayor’s office didn’t know about the plan. Surprise!

Neither party has much of a leg to stand on in the Morality arena in these cases…

6. Talk the talk, walk the walk. South Carolina’s family-values Gov. Mark Sanford’s staff thought he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Wait, what’s that – he’s in Buenos Aires? With whom? Of course, New York’s crime-fighting Gov. Eliot Spitzer didn’t fare much better as “Client-9″ in a hooker’s black book.

7. People have done lots of dumb things over the years to get on TV, but this one is certainly for the history books on stupidity. Making up a cockamamy story about the possibility that your son is accidentally crossing the US in a home-made air balloon has to be one of the most brazen attempts to land a TV spot. Of course, we all know that “kids say the darndest things” and that’s just how the whole story unraveled. Can you say hoax?

8. Although it was bad, it could have been worse. They could have actually published O.J. Simpson’s book “If I Did It.” A novel detailing how the murders could have been done if O.J. had actually committed the crimes. Really?

9. Enron – need we say more? First the energy company turned the lights out on California and then the Feds turned the lights out on Enron – the company that has become known as the epitome of Corporate greed.
