I was born in Harbin and remember going to the festival as a child. But since moving to the states and going to school and all i never had a winter break that coincided with the festival. I had the opportunity to return 2 years ago and it was more spectacular than i remembered. The scale and detail of these sculptures is mind-blowing. If you ever get a chance to visit China in winter make a trip to Harbin, you’ll thank me later.

If only they could apply this kind of detail to the rest of the infrastructure… you know, the crumbling apartments, roads, bridges, etc…

the only things made to last in China were those that a) The rest of the world will see or b) that were built more than 300 years ago.

  3. Those are beautiful, it’s like an illuminated version of the Ice Hotel.

  4. These are quite beautiful. I am sure they are even more spectacular in person.

  5. Richard says:

Relax Sue. I don’t love communism, but they’re trying. Remember what the Western world was like 200 years ago? Crumbling roads, horrible infrastructure, hanging prisoners left and right, etc, etc… The developing world is moving along slowly, just like we all did.

These ice sculptures are wicked. I’ve been to China twice but never Harbin. Would love to go in winter to see this.

Harbin has an awesome foreign scene too, totally dominated by people 20 – 35 years old. The cracks infrastructure adds to its appeal, and if you are the kind of person who’d mercilessly complain about China without even going then you can feck off, because nobody in Harbin wants to hang out with you anyway.

I love these sculptures:) I hate the cold but being from Connecticut USA I am used to freezing temps during the winter. I am planning a trip in a couple years and I will brave the cold to see these amazing sculptures!
The bar loos so awesome, and I’m sure it’s not to crowded there because of the temperatures lol.
